Fostering Collaboration | Seeking Alternatives | Pursuing Excellence
China’s unprecedented transformation in the context of globalization, marketization and urbanization has led to an urgent demand for a more nuanced and balanced knowledge of its nature, dynamics and impacts. The Fudan-European Centre for China Studies is a joint initiative of Fudan University and the University of Copenhagen to meet this growing demand. By engaging with high-level China studies in the European context, the Centre will function as an innovative platform for promoting cutting-edge, cross-disciplinary and comparative research on China.
Our centre was officially established in Copenhagen in April 2013, under the same roof as Nordic Institute of Asia Studies (NIAS). Thanks to a valued and evolving partnership with NIAS and many other important actors, we are in the process of articulating our research landscapes and building productive new channels for China studies in the region.
As a centre of knowledge development and transfer, we are devoted to providing opportunities and organizing activities for relevant academics, professionals and practitioners to exchange views and to develop collaborative initiatives on China studies. Let us work together and combine our various unique potentials and resources into new ideas and new solutions for a momentous era.
We appreciate your interest and inputs, and look forward to your cooperation.

The Fudan-European Centre for China Studies was established by Fudan University in 2013 in partnership with the University of Copenhagen. The Centre is a strategic initiative of Fudan University to meet the growing demand for a more nuanced and balanced understanding of China’s development and its global impacts by engaging with and advancing high-level China studies in Europe. As a centre seeking excellence in knowledge creation and transfer, it focuses on critical issues of Chinese politics, economics, society and culture through cross-disciplinary and comparative research.
The Centre promotes theory-driven, empirically grounded, policy-relevant research on China’s multi-faceted transformation in the context of globalization, marketization and urbanization. It covers five thematic research areas – (1) welfare and social policy, (2) governance and political development, (3) peace and conflict resolution, (4) innovation and economic sustainability, (5) identity and cultural dynamics – within which concrete collaborative initiatives will be developed.
Our centre is committed to integrate and broaden academic resources on the thematic research areas identified above. It brings together leading experts and scholars, and builds active research communities through roundtable discussions, lecture series, topical conferences, a visiting scholar scheme as well as joint research.
Based on the platform for humanities and social sciences of Fudan University and embedded in our strategic partnership with the Nordic Institute of Asia Studies (NIAS), the University of Copenhagen and other European research agencies and institutes, the Centre is the focal point of a unique international network for knowledge innovation on China.
